APPLE & AGRICULTURAL CONTESTS

The 44th Annual Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival 

will feature Apple & Agricultural Contests at the 

Berkeley County Youth Fair Grounds 

Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22, 2023

ALL APPLES MUST BE WEST VIRGINIA GROWN!! 

Decisions of the judges will be final. 

Entries will be accepted Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 8-9 a.m. 

Judging will occur at 9 a.m.

LARGEST APPLE 

--Apple Industry Participants Only 

First Place--$25 cash, plaque, & ribbon 

ARRANGEMENT WITH APPLES AND/OR APPLE PARTS 

--Open to the public

--not to exceed 30” X 30” space 

First Place: $50 cash, plaque, & ribbon 

Second Place: $25 cash & ribbon 

APPLE VARIETY IDENTIFICATION 

--Open to the public
Stop Saturday or Sunday of the festival before noon at the display of apple varieties in front of the Goat Barn at the Berkeley County Youth Fairgrounds to participate!  Winner will correctly identify the most apples available in the contest. In the event of a tie-two or more contestants correctly identifying the same number of apples-the winner will be selected from a random drawing from those eligible. 

1st Place $50 cash 

2nd Place $25 cash

Winners announced Sunday, October 16, 2021, at 12 p.m.

APPLE PEELING AND EATING CONTESTS 

--Open to the public | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2023

Contestants for the Apple Peeling and Eating Contests will register at the Apple Agricultural Display area, at the Berkeley County Youth Fairgrounds in the Main Indoor Arena. 

 

HOLLIS-LOWMAN APPLE PEELING CONTESTS-12 pm 

*Two Classes: Class winner will present the longest unbroken peel. Contestants use the knives that are provided or they may use their own peelers which can be either a hand-held peeler or knife. 15 minutes is the time limit for peeling. 

*Each Class: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons presented 

Winner 2021 Apple Peeling Contest: $50 cash & plaque 

2nd Place 2021 Apple Peeling Contest: $25 cash 

Previous Years Apple Peeling Winners Champion: $50 cash & plaque 

Previous Years Apple Peeling Winners 2nd Place: $25 cash 

The Annual Hollis-Lowman Apple Peeling Contests are in memory of 

Mr. & Mrs. Roy W. Hollis and Mr. & Mrs. Richard R. Lowman, Jr.

APPLE EATING CONTESTS-12pm

*Three Classes: Contestants will eat an apple from a plate without the use of hands. The first contestant to consume the apple, or the most apple within 2 minutes is the winner. 

*Each Class: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons presented 

Apple Eating: I. 1st Place 8 yrs & under $10 cash & trophy 

2nd Place $5 cash 

II. 1st Place 9-15 yrs. $10 cash & trophy 

2nd Place $5 cash 

III. 1st Place 16 yrs & up $10 cash & trophy 

2nd Place $5 cash

FRUIT RESEARCH STATION OPEN HOUSE 

The USDA- Appalachian Fruit Research Station usually hosts an Open House on

the weekend of the festival.   If you have any questions or want any other information
