Apple Harvest Literacy Initiative

The Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival is bringing the story of Johnny Appleseed, apples, and our region’s agricultural heritage into classrooms across the Eastern Panhandle.

Through a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, we are providing apple-themed children’s books to elementary students in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties, along with a special Johnny Appleseed learn-to-read book for second graders.

To help bring the books to life, we have also created a free digital curriculum featuring age-appropriate literacy activities, discussion prompts, and connections to local history and agriculture.

Teachers and homeschool families are welcome to download and use these resources as part of an Apple Harvest season lesson at home or in the classroom.

Free downloads

Both resources are free PDFs. Feel free to print and share them with your students.
